History Painting painted by Johannes Vermeer

The first paintings by Vermeer were history paintings, the most appreciated genre during his lifetime. However, historical paintings included back then also the depiction of biblical or mythological subjects. Vermeer’s history paintings tend to be executed on a larger canvas, but probably Vermeer could not use those subjects to well for the effects with light, his paintings are most famous for.
